General

Smithfield is one of the largest suburbs in Fairfield City by area.

Smithfield was established in 1836 as the first major settlement in the area.

The Smithfield-Wetherill Park Industrial Estate, the largest industrial estate in the New South Wales state and a manufacturing hub of Sydney, is partially located in the suburb of Smithfield.

While a major part of the suburb is industrial estate, it also has a significant concentration of low-density housing.

The population of Smithfield, as of 2021, was 13,160.

The postcode of Smithfield is 2164.

Cumberland Highway/ Smithfield Road (Route A28) is a mega highway passing through Smithfield. Other major roads/streets in Smithfield include Horsley Drive, Polding Street, Brennan Street and Victoria Street.

Prospect Creek Cyclepath, a dedicated path for cyclists, runs through Smithfield.

Smithfield Public School and Smithfield West Public School are two major options for primary education in the suburb. For higher education, Westfields Sports High School and Fairfield High School in the adjoining suburbs of Fairfield West and Fairfield respectively and a TAFE in Wetherill Park are popular choices.

History

For over 30,000 years, Smithfield was home to the Cabrogal tribe, a subgroup of the Gandangara tribe.

The area that is now Smithefield was once called Chilsholm's Bush.

The settlement in the area did not begin until the early 19th century. John Ryan Brenan, an attorney and Police Magistrate was one of the first settlers in the region. He bought 1,650 acres in 1836 from the colonial government of the time and named it Smithfield after the cattle markets of London and Dublin.

Brenan Street is named after John Ryan Brenan and is the place where the cattle sale yards were established in 1841.

The street patterns and names assigned by Brenan are still used in Smithfield.

The first public school in the suburb opened in 1850. Over the next decades, the area witnessed the construction of a number of churches to meet the spiritual needs of the local community.

Commerce

Horsley Drive is the main commercial street in Smithfield featuring major services and shops, including hospitals, a gym, retail shops, restaurants and a famous pub called the Smithfield Tavern.

The Smithfield-Wetherill Park Industrial Estate is one of the largest in NSW and is home to several offices, factories, warehouses and business headquarters.

Culture & Community

Smithfield’s population is pretty diverse and consists of Australian (12.7%), Assyrian (11.4%), English, Vietnamese and Iraqi, among others. Around 42.4 of the suburb’s population was born in Australia.

31.2% of the suburb’s population spoke English at home. Other popular languages are Arabic (15.3%), Assyrian Neo-Aramaic (10.5%), Vietnamese (9.6%), Chaldean Neo-Aramaic (5.7%) and Spanish (3.2%).

Almost 68.4% of the population was Christian. There are many churches in the neighbourhood and also a mosque and a Vietnamese Buddhist temple.

A large number of houses in the suburb are separate dwellings. Other common types of residences include semi-detached, row or terrace houses, townhouses and flats or apartments.

Smithfield also has an art gallery and a museum.

The suburb is also famous for being one of the shooting locations for the famous 7mate show Housos.

Brenan Park is the largest park and recreational facility in the area. It features sports grounds with facilities for multiple sports, kids’ playgrounds and dedicated picnic areas.
